Monroe County property taxes due: May 10

“Bills are out and we are really busy right now,” Monroe County treasurer Jessica McClellan told the Square Beacon on Wednesday.

That means property owners are sending in the taxes they owe, in response to the bills that were due to be sent out a week ago. The deadline for spring tax bills is Monday, May 10.

Property tax season also explains the drop box that’s been placed just to the side of the north entrance of the Monroe County courthouse. The courthouse building is still closed to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The drop box is listed in a press release from the treasurer’s office issued the last week of March, as one of several options property owners can use to pay their taxes.

Even though the building is closed, it is still possible for property owners to hand over their cash and check payments to a live human being by scheduling an appointment in advance. The number to call to make an appointment is 812-349-2530—press 6 to speak to a staff member.

Other payment methods listed in the press release include mailing the payment and coupon to:

Monroe County Treasurer
P.O. Box 2028
Bloomington, IN 47402

Payments can be made online using an e-check (fee $1.50), VISA debit card (fee $3.95) or credit card (fee 2.45%)—by clicking on “Online Tax Payment” on the county’s home page.

The treasurer’s press release encourages taxpayers who have questions to call 812-349-2523 and leave a brief message that includes their name and address. Questions can also be submitted by email to treasurer@co.monroe.in.us. Emailed questions should include a taxpayer’s name and address.

Tax bills are broken up into two payments, one due in the spring ( May 10) and the other in the fall (Nov. 10). The whole amount can be paid in the spring. If the tax bill is under $25, it is not split in half—it all goes on the spring bill.
