Wednesday: Possible record low for the daily high temperature in Bloomington

The forecast subzero temperatures for Tuesday and Wednesday in Bloomington, Indiana, have been revised by the National Weather Service since last week to go even lower that earlier predicted—on Tuesday -5 F and on Wednesday as low as  -7 F.

Those temperatures probably won’t set a record for the lowest temperature on record for either of the two days.  Since 1895, the period of record, the lowest temperature on record for Jan. 29 is -10 F, set in 1977. For Jan. 30, the low-temperature record was set in 1966, at -12 F.

But the upcoming cold could still set a different kind of record—for the coldest high temperature on the day. The current forecast calls for the high temperature on Tuesday of just 2 F. That would easily set a record for the coldest high temperature for any Jan. 30 since 1895, the period of record maintained by the NWS. The current record for the lowest high on Jan. 30 is 10 F, set in 1947.

Last year, five such coldest-high temperatures were set: Jan. 2 (6 F); April 5 (34 F); April 17 (35 F); Jul 31 (71 F); Sept. 10 (62 F).
